Ilkay Gundogan: Manchester City can win Champions League
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is optimistic about his team's chances to win Europe's biggest trophy this season, as the squad is more mature and confident now. Last season Manchester City dominated the Premier League but got knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by Liverpool. Manchester City have won a single European trophy in their history: the Cup Winners' Cup all the way back in 1970. They have not managed to play any more finals since then, the closest they came was in 2016 when they lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals. "I dream of winning the Champions League title with Manchester City and a title with Germany," Gundogan said in an interview with a German newspaper. "In Manchester last season we had the feeling that we are ready for it. It was not enough. This year nothing has changed in this feeling. I believe that we are even a bit more mature. We have the potential to become Champions League winners." Manchester City started the season with three consecutive wins, one in the Community Shield and two in the Premier League, but last weekend they got held to a 1-1 draw at newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ilkay Gundogan joined Manchester City during the 2016-2017 season but a serious knee injury made him unavailable for most of the campaign. He made his return to the first team last season and now he finally seems to be back to the form that earned him the transfer to the Etihad Stadium. "I enjoy playing at Manchester City. I'm satisfied right now and well on the way to getting back into shape," he added. "The leaders of the club were always behind me in the difficult phase and I had complete support. I do not forget something like that." Manchester City are 11/2 at Bet365 to win the Champions League trophy this season.
