Premier League: Everton vs Southampton preview

Everton are still looking for their first victory of the season after a summer of heavy spending on the transfer market, the next opportunity is on Saturday when they host Southampton at Goodison Park. Last season the Saints secured a 1-1 draw in this fixture after having won the home match 4-1. Everton have won just one of their last five matches against Southampton in the Premier League, but the Saints have not won at Goodison Park since 1997. The last six direct matches have produced two wins apiece and two draws.

Everton started their season with a 2-2 draw at Wolves last week, even though new signing Richarlison put them ahead in that match twice. The Brazilian got injured after having scored the two goals and might not be available for Saturday's match, while fellow new signings Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes are not yet match fit. Phil Jagielka got sent off last weekend and is now banned for three matches, while James McCarthy is injured. New signing Bernard could make his debut in this match but not in the starting eleven.

Southampton had a rather disappointing start to the season as they got held to a goalless draw at home by Burnley last weekend but they seemed to be playing better after new signings Mohamed Elyounoussi and Danny Ings came on in the second half. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was the man of the match as he secured a point for the Saints by keeping a clean sheet, so he will most likely keep his place between the sticks ahead of new signing Angus Gunn. Maya Yoshida is not yet fit for a full match, while Stuart Armstrong picked up a knock and is a doubt for Saturday's match.

Probable line-ups:

Everton: Pickford - Coleman, Holgate, Keane, Baines - Gueye, Schneiderlin - Walcott, Sigurdsson, Richarlison - Tosun

Southampton: McCarthy - Stephens, Vestergaard, Hoedt, Bertrand - Redmond, Lemina, Romeu, Elyounoussi - Ings, Austin

My prediction: Everton to win 3-1, the Toffees are stronger even though they don't have all their new signings available yet.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Everton win - 1.85
Draw - 3.40
Southampton win - 4.33
