Premier League: Toby Alderweireld unsure of Tottenham future

Belgium central defender Toby Alderweireld is not sure of his future at Tottenham, despite a string of convincing performances at the 2018 World Cup. The 29-year-old defender had a difficult season in the Premier League, he played just 14 times as he struggled to recover from a hamstring injury. However, even when Alderweireld was fully fit Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino preferred to field Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen as his pair of central defenders. Alderweireld was a key member in the Belgium team that finished third at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, playing five of his side's six matches at the tournament.

"I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We will see," Alderweireld told a Belgian newspaper after having returned from Russia. "I was very focused on the World Cup. I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play - for whatever reason - was unjustified. I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November." Alderweireld is under contract with Tottenham for another season and Manchester United are rumoured to be interested in signing the defender.

Tottenham finished third in the Premier League last season, just three points behind second-placed Manchester United. Alderweireld has been with the Spurs since 2015, when they bought him from Atletico Madrid for 11.5 million pounds after a season-long loan at Southampton. The central defender had a great first season at White Hart Lane, he played all 38 Premier League matches and scored four goals before being picked in the PFA Team of the Year and being elected Tottenham Player of the Year.

Toby Alderweireld is 1/3 at SkyBet to leave Tottenham this summer and he is 1/2 to join Manchester United before the end of the transfer window.
