Premier League: Everton vs Southampton preview

Southampton will be desperate to get the three points on Saturday as they travel to meet Everton at Goodison Park. The Saints did win the reverse fixture quite convincingly in November, it ended 4-1 at St Mary's with goals from Dusan Tadic, Steven Davis and a brace from Charlie Austin. However, the Saints don't have a brilliant away record against Everton, they have lost five of the last six matches at Goodison Park and have not beaten the Toffees away from home since the distant 1997.

Everton have done pretty well this season, especially considering the terrible start to the campaign. New boss Sam Allardyce has managed to turn things around and now the Toffee can enjoy a calm season finale in eighth place, with no relegation worries but also with no hopes of qualifying for next season's Europa League. They have won their last two matches and have not lost in four games, including the Merseyside Derby at the beginning of April. James McCarthy, Maarten Stekelenburg, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Mason Holgate, Eliaquim Mangala and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are injured and won't be able to play in this match.

Southampton have three matches left to play this season and they need to win at least one of them in order to stand a chance of surviving in the Premier League. Last week the Saints secured a vital 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, so now they are just one point away from safety. After this match they will have to play direct rivals Swansea before facing champions Manchester City at home on the final day of the season, so anything they could get at Everton, even a single point, could prove quite important. Steven Davis is the only injury concern for the away side.

Probable line-ups:

Everton: Pickford - Coleman, Jagielka, Keane, Baines - Gueye, Schneiderlin - Vlasic, Rooney, Walcott - Tosun

Southampton: McCarthy - Bednarek, Yoshida, Hoedt - Soares, Romeu, Lemina, Bertrand - Tadic, Austin, Redmond

My prediction: 1-1 draw.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Everton win - 2.89
Draw - 3.29
Southampton win - 2.39

That game was a thriller and very unlucky for the Saints in the end.

By the time they needed the win badly but very unfortunate Everton equalized couple of minutes after the stoppage time has been over with a lucky ricochet shot.

Anyway, that wasn't fatal for the Southampton survival in the end.
