Premier League: Everton vs Liverpool preview

The 231st edition of the Merseyside Derby will take place at Goodison Park on Saturday, when Everton host rivals Liverpool. The reverse fixture ended 1-1 at Anfield Road in December as Wayne Rooney converted a penalty in the second half after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring before the break. The two rivals have also met in the FA Cup this season and Liverpool clinched a 2-1 victory at Anfield Road with goals from James Milner and new signing Virgil van Dijk. Last season Liverpool won both Premier League matches against Everton.

Everton are no longer worried about relegation, there is no pressure on them during the last weeks of the season as they are pretty much safe in ninth place. They have lost just two of their last ten matches at home in the Premier League, but last weekend they were easily beaten 3-1 by leaders Manchester City and their brief two-game winning streak came to an end. Mason Holgate, Eliaquim Mangala, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Maarten Stekelenburg and James McCarthy are all injured and won't be able to play in the derby.

Liverpool should be extremely high on confidence but also quite tired after their sensational Champions League performance on Wednesday when they defeated Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield Road in the first leg of their quarter-finals tie. That result is a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp and his men, who are also in a race for second place in the Premier League. Manchester United are just two points above the Reds, while fourth-placed Tottenham are just two points behind. Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez are injured, along with Adam Lallana and Emre Can. Jurgen Klopp might choose to rest some players, because next week they will have a fierce battle in the second leg at Manchester City.

Probable line-ups:

Everton: Pickford - Coleman, Keane, Williams, Baines - Gueye, Schneiderlin - Walcott, Rooney, Bolasie - Tosun

Liverpool: Karius - Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Moreno - Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum - Chamberlain, Firmino, Mane

My prediction: Liverpool to win 3-1.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Everton win - 4.00
Draw - 3.60
Liverpool win - 1.90
