Antonio Conte is first choice to become the new Italy boss
Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio has made it quite clear that he would want current Chelsea manager Antonio Conte to become the new Italy boss. The Italian Football Federation decided to sack head coach Giampiero Ventura after Italy were defeated 1-0 on aggregate by Sweden in the World Cup qualification play-offs. The defeat meant Italy would miss their first World Cup final tournament since 1958 and was labelled by Italian media as "disaster" and "apocalypse". Antonio Conte led Italy at the 2016 European Championship, but at the end of the tournament he quit the job and joined Chelsea. "Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto Mancini, Carlo Ancelotti... I say getting warmer," Tavecchio said in an interview with an Italian newspaper. "And Conte? Fire!" Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri said that he does want to lead the national team one day, but not at the moment, while Roberto Mancini is currently under contract with Zenit St Petersburg in Russia. Carlo Ancelotti is available after being sacked by Bayern Munich earlier this season. Former AS Roma and Italy midfielder Luigi Di Biagio might also be in contention for the job, he is currently coaching Italy's Under-21 national team. The bookmakers see Carlo Ancelotti as the big favourite, he is 1/1 at SkyBet to become the next permanent manager of the Italian national football team, while Roberto Mancini is 6/2 to get the job and Antonio Conte is 8/1 to leave Chelsea and rejoin Italy.
