World Cup Qualifying: Australia vs Honduras preview

There are just four places left at the 2018 World Cup final tournament and one of them is up for grabs in Wednesday's play-off match between Australia and Honduras at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney. The first leg ended goalless in Honduras, leaving the qualification battle wide open but with a slight advantage for Australia. Honduras have qualified for the World Cup on three occasions, while Australia have been at four final tournaments, including the last three editions.

Australia had a tough route to the play-offs, they finished third in the Asian World Cup qualification group and then squeezed past Syria thanks to an extra-time goal in the previous play-off round. They can be optimistic ahead of the match against Honduras because of their very good home record, they are unbeaten in the last six qualifying matches on home soil and have won five of them. Mark Milligan and Mathew Leckie are available again after having served suspensions in the first leg.

Honduras finished fourth in the North and Central American qualification group, leaving the United States team out of the World Cup. They are unbeaten in their last six matches but they have won just one of their last five qualifying matches away from home. However, their last away results in the campaign secured their qualification for the play-offs: a 2-1 win at Trinidad and Tobago and a 1-1 draw with Costa Rica. Captain Maynor Figueroa and Alberth Elis are available again after being banned for the first leg.

Probable line-ups:

Australia: Ryan - Wright, Milligan, Sainsbury - Leckie, Luongo, Jedinak, Behich - Mooy, Rogic - Juric

Honduras: Escober - Beckeles, H. Figueroa, M. Figueroa, Izaguirre - Mejia, Claros - Elis, Lopez, Quioto - Lozano

My prediction: Australia to win 2-1.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Australia win - 1.57
Draw - 3.79
Honduras win - 6.50
