Premier League: Chelsea sign Danny Drinkwater
Chelsea have completed an important deal on transfer deadline day as they secured the signing of Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater for 35 million pounds. The 27-year-old midfielder was one of the best players in Leicester's historic title-winning season in 2015-2016 but now he has asked to leave the club to join reigning champions Chelsea. Drinkwater played in 35 of the 38 matches of the season when Leicester won the title and also earned his first caps for England. He has not played at all this season due to a thigh injury. "I'm delighted to be a Chelsea player and can't wait to get started," said Drinkwater. "It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies." Chelsea have also signed 25-year-old Italian full-back Davide Zappacosta from Torino on a four-year deal. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte knows Zappacosta very well as he gave the youngster his first call-up to the Italian national team in May 2016, before becoming the Chelsea boss. "I hope I can show my quality to the coach, my team-mates and the supporters," said Zappacosta. He joined Torino from Atalanta in 2015 and made 29 league appearances last season. Chelsea also tried to sign Swansea striker Fernando Llorente on transfer deadline day, but the Spaniard chose to join Tottenham instead. A move for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley was also attempted, the Toffees accepted a bid from the Blues, but eventually the player turned down the move. Chelsea are 11/2 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title again this season.
