Tennis: John McEnroe proposes men vs women matches

Tennis legend John McEnroe continues to push the controversy with Serena Williams, suggesting that we should have men vs women tennis contests in order to prove his point. Last week McEnroe claimed that Serena Williams would be ranked "700 in the world" on the men's circuit. McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, admitted that Serena Williams is the best female player that tennis has ever seen, but insisted that she could not compete against men. Serena Williams, who has taken a break from the WTA circuit due to pregnancy, replied on Twitter: "Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based. I've never played anyone ranked "there" nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir." McEnroe replied: "I've got a solution. Men and women play together. Then we don't have to guess. I'm sure the men would be all for it." This would not be the first time a male tennis player took on a woman player. In 1973, American Bobby Riggs was 55 years old but he was a former world number one in the 1940s. Billie Jean King, the world number one in women's tennis in 1973, accepted the challenge to play against Riggs and beat him 6-4 6-3 6-3. Petra Kvitova is 5/3 at Bet365 to win the upcoming Wimbledon tournament, while Roger Federer is the favourite in the men's draw, he is 9/4 to win the tournament.
