Cycling: Tom Dumoulin wins 100th Giro d'Italia
Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin became the first ever Dutch rider to win the Giro d'Italia after an almost perfect performance in Sunday's last stage, a time trial between Monza and Milano. The 26-year-old Dutchman won the Giro by 31 seconds after starting the stage in fourth place, 53 seconds behind leader Nairo Quintana. Dumoulin beat the Colombian by more than a minute in the time trial. Quintana finished second overall, while defending champion Vincenzo Nibali finished third. "It's really crazy," said Dumoulin, who also became the first rider from his country to win a Grand Tour since Joop Zoetemelk's victory in the 1980 Tour de France. "This is incredible. It was such a nerve-wracking day but I had good legs and I just went for it. I would have been really happy with a stage win and that would have been a successful Giro for me. I didn't think that this was something I could do." Luxembourger Bob Jungels won the white jersey as the best under-25 rider in the race, Spaniard Mikel Landa won the climbers' classification, while Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria won the points classification at his first ever participation in the Giro. Nairo Quintana's goal for the season was to win both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. The first leg of that duo was not a success, but he will most likely aim for the final victory in the Tour. Chris Froome is 8/11 at Bet365 to win the Tour de France, Richie Porte is 10/3 and Nairo Quintana is 9/2 to win it.
