Back UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid preview

Another edition of the Madrid derby will take place on Wednesday as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid clash in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Last Tuesday the two rivals played out a goalless draw in the first leg. The two rivals have already met no less than seven times this season, and Real Madrid have not managed to win any of them. Both league matches were won by Atletico, including a 2-1 success at the Santiago Bernabeu. The first ever Madrid derby took place in the 1928-29 season.

Real Madrid are looking to become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League trophy. First they have to get past their city rivals though, if they succeed it would be their ninth success over two legs out of their ten previous Champions League quarter-final ties. The group stage was easy for the Blancos, they won all their six matches and finished 11 points clear of runners-up Basel. The first knockout round almost produced a shock though as they were defeated 4-3 by Schalke in Madrid after having won the first leg 2-0 in Germany. Real Madrid will be without Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, both picked up injuries last weekend, while left back Marcelo is suspended.

Atletico Madrid are seeking their fifth semi-final presence in this competition, last time was during the previous season when they knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-finals. They have won seven and lost five of their previous European matches against fellow Spanish teams. They also have a solid record away from home, they lost just two of ten. Last weekend they clinched a 2-1 league win over Deportivo La Coruna. Atletico will be without suspended Mario Suarez but they don't have any fresh injury problems.

Probable line-ups:

Real Madrid: Casillas - Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Arbeloa - Kroos, Isco, Illarramendi - Ronaldo, Benzema, James

Atletico Madrid: Oblak - Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Siqueira - Gabi, Koke, Tiago - Turan, Mandzukic, Griezmann

My prediction: 1-1 draw.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
