DraftKings Moves Forward with European Expansion
DraftKings has recently made headlines for officially becoming the first operator of any kind, approved by the Malta Gaming Authority for its skill-gaming license, which it hopes will enable it to further expand to a series of European countries. As a major source of European online gambling licensing, the grant from the MGA will surely catapult the operator in the right direction. Additionally, this past weekend, it administered beta-testing in Germany, in an effort resume its global expansion plans, first set into motion in 2015. The daily fantasy sports (DFS) brand's, Jeffrey Haas, commented in an official statement, 'Germany is known for its passionate sports fans and we are pleased to welcome them to daily fantasy sports. Germans show a proclivity for American sports, particularly the NFL and NBA. Initial testing in Germany shows that our most popular sport has been the NBA, which is why we are opening our beta test to all German sports fans.' Despite its plans to increase on a global scale, the brand's domestic standing saw a major surge instead, resulting in multiple lawsuits. As such challenges across the U.S. began to emerge, the DFS operator was forced to halt its expansion. After much damage control, the brand is back at it, having just launched a new batch funding. It has accumulated a total of $100 million thus far. DraftKings provides an online hub in which sports fans can participate in daily or weekly fantasy sports contests for cash prizes, which are based upon both individual and team efforts in major sports categories.
