Premier League: Luis Suarez wanted to join Arsenal, says Arsene Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed in a TV interview some facts about the controversial failed transfer of Luis Suarez to the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners tried to sign Suarez from Liverpool in 2013, but the whole deal ended in embarrassment for Arsene Wenger and the club. For some reason, Arsenal were under the impression that Luis Suarez had a minimum fee release clause of 40 million pounds at Liverpool, so they made an offer worth £40,000,001, thinking that Liverpool had to accept it. The offer prompted an ironical response from Liverpool owner John W. Henry, who tweeted: “What are they smoking over there at the Emirates?”. The ironic question has not been answered, but Luis Suarez never ended up at Arsenal. He remained at Liverpool, had a great season, and then moved on to Spanish giants Barcelona. Wenger said: “He was very close. We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him." Liverpool were reluctant to sell a big player like Suarez to a Premier League rival, so they probably would never had accepted an offer from Arsenal. Wenger added: “I'm convinced he wanted to join us and then they sold him. They kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him the year later to a club abroad." In other news, the French manager has not yet presented the much-expected news about his future. All he said was that he had made up his mind, but has not revealed whether that means he has signed a new contract with Arsenal. Arsenal are 3/1 at Bet365 to clinch a top-four Premier League finish this season.
