FA Cup: Southampton vs Arsenal preview
League Cup finalists Southampton will try to make it through to the FA Cup last sixteen if they manage to beat Arsenal at St Mary's on Saturday. The Saints have already beaten Arsenal in the League Cup this season, it ended 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in November with goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand. Arsenal won 2-1 at home in the Premier League in September, but Southampton won their last two home games at Arsenal, 4-0 and 2-0, and the Gunners have not won at St Mary's since 2003. Southampton clinched their fourth win out of their last five competitive matches earlier this week as they beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield Road to secure a place in the League Cup final. That was their third consecutive victory in all competitions and also their third consecutive clean sheet. James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez got injured during the League Cup match and will most likely not feature on Saturday, while Virgil van Dijk should also be out of contention with an ankle injury. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six competitive matches, with five wins collected in the process along with the spectacular 3-3 draw at Bournemouth earlier this month. Last weekend they struggled to beat Burnley at home, with Alexis Sanchez scoring the winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Granit Xhaka was sent off in that match and received a four-game ban, Mohamed Elneny is away on international duty, but Theo Walcott could make his return from injury. Danny Welbeck might be given a starting place for the first time this season.
