England manager Gareth Southgate: "We took over a mess"
England were held to a goalless draw in their World Cup qualifying match in Slovenia on Tuesday, not exactly the result the fans were expecting after the unimpressive victory over Malta last week. However, England are still leading the table in Group F, two points clear of Lithuania and Slovenia. England failed to impress in Slovenia as well and interim manager Gareth Southgate admitted he had to thank goalkeeper Joe Hart for walking away with a point at the end of the match. "With the overall objective of qualifying, we have kept the team on track," said Southgate. "But we have taken over a mess really and had to steady the ship." Southgate, the former England Under-21 manager, has been promoted to the senior team after boss Sam Allardyce left the job following controversial comments he made to incognito reporters about how one can work around transfer regulations. Joe Hart, who has made costly mistakes against Wales and Iceland at Euro 2016, was truly decisive in Slovenia as he pulled off a series of amazing saves. "We owe our goalkeeper really for getting a point," Southgate admitted. "He was fantastic. He's at his best when he's calm and composed, it's something we've discussed and this week his manner has been very calm. He was at his best tonight. We didn't start either half well and it's an outstanding save that gets us a point." England are 1/8 at Bet365 to win Group F, where they compete with Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Scotland and Malta.
