Euro 2016: Roy Hodgson resigns after England defeat to Iceland
The surprising 2-1 defeat at the hands of Iceland on Monday prompted England boss Roy Hodgson to announce his immediate resignation. The manager had been in charge of the England national team for four years. He enjoyed good results in qualifying, maximum points in the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign for instance, but in final tournaments England have only managed to win 3 games out of 11 under Roy Hodgson. "I'm sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen," Hodgson said after the match. "Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically and done everything asked of them. I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon." Hodgson was expecting a new contract from the Football Association at the end of Euro 2016, but that will no longer be the case now. The FA said: "Like the nation, we are disappointed to lose this evening and that our run in Euro 2016 has come to a premature end. We had high hopes of progressing through to the latter stages of the competition and accept that we have not met our own expectations or those of the country. We back Roy Hodgson's decision to step down as England manager and will discuss next steps imminently." There doesn't seem to be a firm favourite for the job, but the bookmakers believe Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate is the top contender at the moment. Here are the odds for the new England manager at SkyBet: Gareth Southgate - 11/8 Alan Shearer - 11/2 Harry Redknapp - 6/1 Glenn Hoddle - 8/1 Gary Neville - 10/1 Alan Pardew - 11/1
