Back Tennis: Roger Federer loses to teenage Alexander Zverev in Halle

Roger Federer's attempt to win a ninth title at the grass-court tournament in Halle ended on Saturday as he was defeated in the semi-finals 7-6 5-7 6-3 by young German Alexander Zverev. Federer was the reigning champion in Halle and was about to reach a record 11th consecutive final at this tournament. Teenage Zverev was too strong though, especially on his service game.

Federer, the current world number 3, had not lost to a teenage player since almost 10 years ago when he was defeated by a young Andy Murray in Cincinnati back in 2006. This was the first ever win against a top ten player for Zverev. The young German is currently ranked 38th in the world. He dropped just four points on his serve in the opening set, delivering 14 winners en route to a 7-4 tie-break win.

Roger Federer fought back and took the second set with a break, but in the third set Zverev was pretty much flawless. The German teenager will meet fellow countryman Florian Mayer in the final, who defeated Austrian youngster Dominic Thiem 6-3 6-4 in the other semi-final.

Alexander Zverev is 2/5 at Bet365 to win the final on Sunday, while Florian Mayer is 23/20 to win the title.
