Back Championship: Aston Villa to appoint Roberto Di Matteo as manager

Aston Villa are getting close to reaching an agreement with former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, according to Sky Sports. The club has a new owner, Dr Tony Xia, who was particularly impressed with Di Matteo's plans for the club. Dr Xia has taken over Aston Villa for 76 million pounds, but the deal will be officially concluded only after he will pass the Premier League's owners' and directors' test. Aston Villa chairman Steve Hollis initially wanted Nigel Pearson as the new manager, but the former Leicester City boss has joined Derby County.

Di Matteo has also held talks with Serie A club Lazio but it seems the two parties have not reached an agreement. The former Chelsea boss has been out of work for a year after leaving Bundesliga side Schalke at the end of a seven-month spell. Aston Villa are without a manager after former boss Remi Garde left the club. Di Matteo has won the Champions League in his brief managerial career, he led Chelsea to glory in 2012 after Andre Villas-Boas got sacked. Six months after that triumph he left Chelsea following a disappointing 3-0 Champions League defeat against Juventus.

New Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has said that he would be willing to spend between 30 and 40 million pounds on new players this summer. Burnley boss Sean Dyche and former Manchester United manager David Moyes have also been linked with the Aston Villa job. There have also been rumours involving former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli as a new technical director at Villa Park, but the Frenchman denied any contact with Dr Xia.

Aston Villa are 10/1 at Bet365 to win the Championship next season.
