Back Premier League: Arsenal sign Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka

Arsenal have completed their first signing of the summer: Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach. The Swiss international, aged 23, has made 41 appearances for his national team. The two clubs have not disclosed the transfer fee. The player has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners.

"I'm very proud to be joining Arsenal," said Xhaka. "I cannot wait to move to London, represent this special club and play in the Premier League. I will give everything to help Arsenal win trophies and make the fans happy." Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger added: "Granit Xhaka is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience. We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad."

Xhaka has made 108 appearances in the German Bundesliga, scoring five goals. He will play with Switzerland at Euro 2016 before joining the Arsenal training camp. The Gunners needed some reinforcements in midfield as three central midfielders will leave the club this summer: Mahieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky. Xhaka joined Monchengladbach in 2012 from his boyhood club FC Basel, where he graduated the youth academy before winning two Swiss top-flight titles.

Arsenal are 6/1 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title next season.
