Back Premier League: Rafa Benitez considers Newcastle future

Newcastle United club owner Mike Ashley has met manager Rafa Benitez on the last day of the season to discuss the manager's future at the club. Newcastle ended the season with a glorious 5-1 victory over Tottenham, but they did get relegated to the Championship nonetheless. Benitez has a three-year contract with Newcastle, he took over in March after Steve McClaren was sacked. However, the contract might have an early release clause in case the Magpies get relegated.

The Spanish manager said he would be tempted to stay at the club if the board and owner would share his ambitions. "Hopefully this week we will start analysing what is going on and what will be the future of Newcastle United and my future," Benitez said after Sunday's match. "I will talk, I will analyse and I will try to do the best for me, that has to be the best for Newcastle United. So, you can put it one way or the other way, the best for Newcastle United or the best for me, but.... if we go together it has to be the best for both."

Rafa Benitez was particularly impressed with the Newcastle fans and revealed that their support will be an important factor in his decision. "I don't know what Ashley will do, but I have an appointment with Lee Charnley so I will talk to him. If they want both to talk with me it will be fine, no problem. My heart is saying yes - great club, great city and opportunity - but you have to use your brain too. I said before that I was expecting a great atmosphere, but it has been amazing. Even more positive than I was expecting. We still have to sit down and talk. I want the best for Newcastle United and the best for me. That's simple."

Newcastle United are the top favourites to win the Championship next season, they are 3/1 to finish top of the table and get right back to the Premier League.
