Back Serie A: Gianluigi Buffon signs contract extension with Juventus

Juventus legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has signed a new contract with the Serie A champions, the new deal will run out at the end of the 2017-2018 season. Buffon, now aged 38, had joined Juventus in 2001 and is celebrating his fifth consecutive league title with the Bianconeri. He is still the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of football as Juventus paid £32m to Parma for his transfer.

"I hope my fantastic story with this club will go on and bring even further success," said Buffon. Another veteran of the team, 35-year-old defender Andrea Barzagli, has also extended his contract with the club until 2018. However, Barzagli has announced that he will retire from international football after Euro 2016.

Gianluigi Buffon has a record 156 caps for the Italian national team and has no intention of leaving international football behind. He is hoping to compete at the 2018 World Cup and then contemplate retirement at the age of 40. He has won seven Serie A titles, plus another two crowns that were stripped following the Calciopoli scandal that has seen Juventus get relegated to the Serie B. He was one of the few club stars that agreed to remain at Juventus during the season that they spent in the second tier of Italian football.

Juventus could do the domestic double if they capture the Coppa Italia at the end of this season, they face AC Milan in the final on May 21st and they are 2/5 at Bet365 to win it.
