Back Primera Liga: Gerard Pique still confident after third consecutive defeat

Barcelona central defender Gerard Pique insists the Blaugrana will win the Primera Liga title despite a 2-1 defeat at home to Valencia on Sunday. That was the fourth defeat in five competitive games for Barca, who saw their lead at the top of the league table go from nine points at the start of April to zero as Atletico Madrid are now tied with them on 76 points. They also got knocked out of the Champions League between the three consecutive league defeats.

"We can't be worried when you look at the way we're playing," Pique said. It's true that Barcelona had numerous chances to score against Valencia, including a huge opportunity for Pique himself during the closing minutes of the game. But Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves had an outstanding performance as Barca lost three league matches in a row for the first time since 2003. "If we play like this we'll win the league, I'm convinced of that," added Pique. "Although it's a step backwards, playing this well will help the team mentally. We've recovered the sensations from a month ago."

Real Madrid started the bad patch for Barca as they handed them the first defeat in 39 matches on April 2. Now Real Madrid have a title shot of their own as they are just one point behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The derby defeat was followed by a surprising 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad. "Feeling sorry for ourselves we won't win anything," head coach Luis Enrique said after Sunday's match. "I think we have criticised ourselves when it has been necessary, but today is not a day to criticise my players, it is a day to congratulate them," he added. "In the second half the players gave a lesson in how to face a situation like this. Until the 93rd minute they were trying to equalise and that is something to highlight. We've got a marvellous challenge. If we win the five games remaining we will be champions. If there is a team capable of doing it - and much more given what they have done - it is this Barca."

In fact, if Barcelona win their remaining five league matches they will be crowned champions. The bookmakers think they can do it, Barcelona are 1/2 at Bet365 to secure the Primera Liga title.
