Chelsea are looking to strengthen their defence with Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels, according to Mirror Online. The German is believed to be wanted by incoming manager Antonio Conte, but he has also been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United. There haven't been any official bids for the defender yet though.
Hummels, aged 27, is one of the best central defenders in Europe at the moment and Dortmund might look to cash in on him this summer as his contract runs out at the end of next season. If he refuses to renew his contract the transfer fee might be quite convenient for Chelsea, unless other clubs submit superior bids.
The Blues need a central defender to replace John Terry, who will be leaving the club at the end of the current season. Hummels has made 35 appearances for Dortmund this season and has joined the German club in 2009 from rivals Bayern Munich. He has 44 caps for the German national team and has scored for goals for his nation.
Chelsea are currently 10th in the Premier League and they are 10/1 at Bet365 to achieve an unlikely top six finish this season.

One of my favourite defenders linked with my favourite club. A Blues fan wet dream. In every verson of Football Manager, I sell Cahill and buy Hummels :) Anyway, he is standard in World Cup winning selection, which says it all about his quality. For sure a top class player, and I was thinking will we ever see him somewhere...

For sure a top class player, and I was thinking will we ever see him somewhere outside a Dortmund since he has been loyal to "Millioners" from the day he crossed on the pitch. Just hoping this isn't just a rumor, and that Chelsea will do whatever is in their power to buy this more then a replacement for our capitan John Terry.

Hummels is a class defender and with a lot of experience all ready, so it's not surprising that Europe's biggest teams wants him. He was a MU target signing last season but the deal never happen and it's tough to believe that he'll sign with them now when he could choose from 4-5 top teams especially after United probably...

It is true that nobody can replace him, but just in terms of leadership. His football qualities were at top level, but right now Hummels is space shuttle for him. If Chelsea sign Hummels this summer it will be certainly a bargain because they will get him for something like 20m, it is laughable sum for quallity you get...

No one can and no one will replace John Terry. The man who is playing for Chelsea since 1997. Great legend. But the years have done job and the replacement is a natural thing. Bringing a good player like Hummels for a decent sum of money, hmm, it looks like a good deal for Chelsea .

Hummels is great defender but also a solid player. He passes the ball well, solid technique. Chelsea doesn't have this kind of defender in their current squad, since Luiz left. They may get him relatively cheaply because of his contract running out in 2017. Certainly would be upgrade to Terry or Cahill.
