Back Premier League: Wayne Rooney out for six weeks

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will be out of contention for around six weeks due to a knee injury. The England skipper picked up the knock last weekend, during Manchester United's 2-1 loss at Sunderland. He could miss the team's next eight matches, during a decisive period of the season.

"He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope," said Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal. Rooney remained on the pitch until the end of the match at Sunderland, despite the injury. "He's a guy who wants to go until the end and if he's feeling a pain he doesn't want to go off. He wants to win," Van Gaal said. "That's a fantastic attitude but sometimes it's also bad for his body."

Rooney will also miss England's friendly matches against Germany and Holland at the end of March, but should be able to be fit for participation at Euro 2016 as the tournament kicks off on June 10. Manchester United are currently fifth in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Rooney has scored 7 goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season.

Manchester United are 9/2 at Bet365 to clinch a top-four Premier League finish this season.
