Back Premier League: Newcastle set to sign Tottenham's Andros Townsend

Newcastle and Tottenham have reached an agreement for the transfer of winger Andros Townsend, the Magpies will have to pay 12 million pounds if they manage to reach an agreement with the player as well. Townsend, aged 24, found himself out of favour this season under manager Mauricio Pochettino and made just three appearances off the bench in the Premier League since the start of the campaign.

He has 10 caps for England but that didn't help him in November when he was sent to play with the Under 21 team after a row with coach Nathan Gardiner. He has not featured for the first team since the end of October 2015. On Monday he has played for Tottenham Under 21 against Liverpool and after the match he tweeted: "Been an absolute pleasure playing with the U21 boys the last 3 or 4 months." About the move to Newcastle, Townsend said at Sky Sports: "As soon as I knew of Newcastle's interest they were the only club I wanted to join. I can't wait to play my first game at St James' Park, I'm excited!"

Newcastle have already spent 17 million pounds on midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet in this transfer window, in an attempt to improve the squad and their chances of avoiding relegation this season. Andros Townsend is a product of the Tottenham youth academy, he had joined them at the age of 8 and became an important first-team player in the 2013-2014 season. He made 50 Premier League appearances for Spurs and scored three goals.

Newcastle are currently 18th in the Premier League table and they are 8/11 at Bet365 to avoid relegation this season.
