Back Primera Liga: Zinedine Zidane replaces Rafael Benitez at Real Madrid

Spanish giants Real Madrid have decided to sack head coach Rafael Benitez after just seven months in charge. The replacement is club legend Zinedine Zidane, former player, scout and coach at the Blancos. A meeting of the club's board ended with the decision of sacking Benitez, while Zidane, who was coaching the club's B team, has been promoted to the first team. The club have not revealed any details regarding Zidane's new contract.

The new head coach said: "I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well." The last game in charge for Benitez was on Sunday, when Real Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Valencia. They are currently third in the Primera Liga, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and two points behind second-placed Barcelona.

The first match in charge for Zidane will be next Saturday, when Real Madrid face Deportivo La Coruna at home. The Frenchman, a former World Cup winner as a player, is the 11th head coach to be hired in the 12 years as club president of Florentino Perez. Zidane added: "I want to do my very best to ensure that this club at the end of the season will have a trophy. It is an important day for me, it's an emotional day, even more emotional than the day I signed as a player for the club. I will be working hard with all the players and I think it will go well. I will put all the heart I have into this job for the club. Thank you very much."

Real Madrid are 9/2 at Bet365 to win the Primera Liga title this season.
