Back League Cup: Southampton vs Aston Villa preview

Southampton have a great chance of reaching the League Cup quarter-finals as they face managerless Aston Villa in the fourth round on Wednesday. The Saints reached the last eight in the previous season. The last visit at St Mary's was a sad one for Aston Villa as they were demolished 6-1 in May. The Villains have won just one of their last six matches against Southampton.

Southampton snatched a good 1-1 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend, but goal scorer Sadio Mane picked up a second yellow card in stoppage time and will be suspended for the Capital One Cup match. The Saints are unbeaten in their last five competitive matches. The previous round was an easy one for Ronald Koeman's men as they secured a 6-0 victory over Championship side MK Dons. Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez are both unavailable through injury.

Aston Villa sacked manager Tim Sherwood after just eight months in charge and Kevin MacDonald took his place as caretaker manager. They are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, with their only win coming on opening day. In the League Cup they needed extra time to knock out League Two side Notts County in round two, but then defeated local rivals Birmingham City in the next round.

Probable line-ups:

Southampton: Stekelenburg - Soares, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand - Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Ramirez, Tadic - Pelle

Aston Villa: Guzan - Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Amavi - Bacuna, Gueye, Ayew, Gil, Traore - Gestede

My prediction: Southampton to win 3-0.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Southampton win - 1.44 Draw - 4.75 Aston Villa win - 8.00
