Back Premier League: Aston Villa sack Tim Sherwood

Premier League side Aston Villa have decided to sack manager Tim Sherwood after just eight months in charge. The Villains are last in the Premier League table after Saturday's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Swansea. It was their sixth consecutive defeat.

The club released a statement saying: "The board believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative." Former Manchester United boss David Moyes is among those who could take the job, while former Lyon head coach Remi Garde has also been linked with the vacancy. Aston Villa Under-21 manager Kevin MacDonald has been appointed as caretaker manager until a permanent solution is found.

Tim Sherwood was appointed in February to replace Paul Lambert and led the team the FA Cup final. Aston Villa finished 17th in his first season in charge, but this season they have won just one of ten league matches. Sherwood has managed the team in just 28 competitive matches, which is the shortest spell of any Villa manager. The club statement also offered Sherwood "sincere thanks for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football set-up".
