Back Premier League: Liverpool's Joe Gomez ruled out for the rest of the season

Liverpool young defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing a cruciate knee ligament. The injury occurred while he was playing for the England U21 team on Tuesday, according to sources quoted by Sky Sports. The 18-year-old defender got injured after a challenge with Abat Aimbetov during England's 3-0 win over Kazakhstan.

England U21 medical staff initially seemed hopeful that the injury was not too bad but scans have revealed the terrible damage. Joe Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton last summer, signing a five-year contract. He became the first-choice left back under Brendan Rodgers and also played as a central defender in Europa League matches.

The knee ligament injury would keep Gomez out of contention for up to nine months, making his return this season highly unlikely. Alberto Moreno should be the first-choice left back for new boss Jurgen Klopp for this weekend's match against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool are 33/1 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title this season.
