Back Premier League: Dick Advocaat quits Sunderland job

Dutch manager Dick Advocaat has resigned as Sunderland boss, as the team have not won any of their eight Premier League matches this season. The 68-year-old experienced manager was appointed in March and rescued the club from relegation. He wanted to leave the club at the end of last season but was persuaded to sign a new one-year contract.

Advocaat said: "I have made the decision to go after only eight games as I felt it was important to give everyone time to turn things around." Sunderland chairman Ellis Short replied: "I am truly saddened by Dick's decision, but I respect him for his honesty. It is also testament to his character that he has foregone any kind of a financial settlement, something which is very unusual in football." Along with Dick Advocaat assistant manager Zeljko Petrovic also decided to leave the club.

Sunderland were held to a draw by West Ham on Saturday, leaving them with just three points after eight league matches. The Black Cats will now be looking to appoint their sixth manager in the last four years. Since November 2011, when Steve Bruce was sacked, Sunderland appointed Martin O'Neill, then Paolo di Canio, then Gus Poyet and Advocaat to manage the club. The only match that the Black Cats won this season was the League Cup fixture against League Two outfit Exeter.

Sunderland are currently 4.33 at Bet365 to avoid relegation this season.
