Back UEFA Champions League: Borussia Monchengladbach vs Manchester City preview

Both Monchengladbach and Manchester City are trying to recover from defeats as they meet on Wednesday evening in Germany. Borussia were at the receiving end of a comprehensive defeat at Sevilla while Man City were defeated at home by Italian champions Juventus. The only previous meeting between these two sides was all the way back in 1979 in the UEFA Cup, that time the Germans won 4-2 on aggregate over two legs. That season Monchengladbach won the UEFA Cup after beating Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in the final.

Monchengladbach have no pressure or expectations as they are playing in the Champions League for the first time in their history this season. Last campaign they secured an unlikely third-place finish in the Bundesliga. Their Champions League debut wasn't the happiest as they were defeated 3-0 by Sevilla. Moreover, they lost their first five Bundelsiga matches this season, a terrible streak that pushed head coach Lucien Favre to resign. Andre Schubert replaced him and snatched a 4-2 victory over Augsburg before a 3-1 win at Stuttgart last weekend. Martin Stranzl is set to miss out through injury.

Man City had a great start to the season, with five wins out of five in the Premier League. Then they were defeated by Juventus in the Champions League with a late goal from Alvaro Morata and another defeat followed in the Premier League, 2-1 at the hands of West Ham. Last weekend the Citizens were thrashed 4-1 by Tottenham, a result which pushed them off the top of the Premier League table. City have several injury problems, with Vincent Kompany, Wilfried Bony, Fabian Delph, Eliaquim Mangala and Gael Clichy all expected to miss out.

Probable line-ups:

Monchengladbach: Sommer - Korb, Nordtveit, Christensen, Wendt - Herrmann, Dahoud, Xhaka - Johnson, Stindl, Raffael

Man City: Hart - Sagna, Otamendi, Demichelis, Kolarov - Fernandinho, Toure - Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling - Aguero

My prediction: Man City to win 3-1.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
