Wayne Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday. The Manchester United striker had equalled Charlton's record of 49 goals when he converted a penalty against San Marino on Saturday, a victory that booked England's place at the 2016 European Championships.
On Tuesday against Switzerland it was Tottenham's Harry Kane who broke the deadlock on 67 minutes and then Rooney converted a penalty kick with six minutes left in the match. The Wembley crowd gave him a standing ovation for breaking Charlton's long-standing record. The 2-0 victory secured top spot in Group E for England.
"It's a great feeling," Rooney said after the match. "I've been close for the last few games and it's a dream come true. I've got a lot of football in me for England. I hope the goals don't stop. It's a very special night for me and my family. A night I will never forget. I was very nervous stepping up to take the penalty. I knew it was such a big moment for me and my career. The players said to me afterwards it was like being at a concert because there were so many flashes from phones in the crowd. It's a huge honour because Sir Bobby Charlton is an England and Manchester United legend. I know Sir Bobby will be extremely proud that a Manchester United captain has broken the record."
Wayne Rooney is 34.00 at Bet365 to become the Premier League top goalscorer this season.

Wayne Rooney deserved this and i am so happy for him. he is hard worker and that is kind of players which I like the most. Sometimes he knows to play different position because of team and he can play in the middle or attack never mind he will keep scoring and that is the biggest quality of this player.

Congratulation to Wayne Rooney he is really special player but i can't agree with johnajax that he is maybe the best player in England history. There are a lot of players better then Rooney with all respect for that player and in near history I will just say David Beckham, nothing else.

I must say only good things about this player about this person. I was watching Rooney from the days when he was in Everton and back then I saw that he can be great player and great scorer but I didn't expect this. This is big thing for him for sure and I don't see in near future that some other player can broke his record.

Wayne Rooney is example of great player, great man and England must be very very proud. He showed through his career that he can play other position than striker and still keep scoring, he is great captain, great leader and I think with all respect for all English players that he is the best English player in history....

Great player, great talent, great record. He could broke not only that but a MU goalscoring record which is also owned by Sir Bobby Charlton. It's not going to be easy because of Van Gaal's style of play in which Rooney looks isolated up front and needs to fight with two or three defenders every time he touches the ball...
