Back Cycling: Chris Froome set to miss World Championships

Britain's Chris Froome, two-time Tour de France winner, will not be able to take part in the World Road Cycling Championships after breaking a foot during the Tour of Spain at the beginning of September. The 30-year-old rider crashed on stage 11, finished that stage but then pulled out of the race. Team Sky director Sir David Brailsford confirmed Froome will not be able to climb on his bike "for a couple of weeks".

The World Championships take place between 19 and 27 September in Virginia, USA. "It looks unlikely," said Brailsford about Froome's participation. "The fracture will take a while to heal." Froome, who won the Tour de France in 2013 and 2015, was on the British squad list for both the road race and time trial events at the World Championships. He was aiming to become the third rider to win both the Tour de France and the Tour of Spain in the same year.

The road race at the World Championships will be quite exciting as there are several strong riders in contention for the victory. Slovakia's Peter Sagan is the favourite according to the bookmakers, he is 7.00 at Bet365 to win the race, but the likes of Alexander Kristoff, Greg Van Avermaet or John Degenkolb also have a good chance to clinch the victory if they make it to the final sprint at the head of the race.
