Irish Oversight for Sportingbet
An oversight resulted in the UK online sportsbook Sportingbet to continue accepting Irish betting action after the introduction of new legislation on August 1st, which requires operators to obtain licensing in Ireland. Sportingbet has a 20,000 legacy Irish player base but wagers were accepted by 200 of these punters. The Irish media brought the issue to the forefront noting that the wagers accepted after the launch of new legislation were illegal. A Sportingbet representative told The Irish Post that the company has addressed the issue. “We have been made aware of a situation in our Irish operations and we are looking into the matter,” he said. “Our early understanding is that a handful of Irish customers were affected. We are honouring all bets made since 1 August as is our tradition.” Sportingbet has since sent out the following email notification to its Irish customers: “As a result of regulatory changes we will no longer be able to offer our Sports betting and Virtual Sports services to Irish customers. “Any non-settled bets will be voided and the funds returned to your Sportingbet account.”
