Back Premier League: West Bromwich sign Salomon Rondon

West Brom have broken their transfer record to sign Zenit St Petersburg striker Salomon Rondon for a fee of around 12 million pounds. The Venezuela international has signed a four-year contract with the Baggies, becoming their fifth summer signing. He was not eligible to play in Monday's Premier League match against Manchester City, lost by West Brom 3-0.

"We feel with age on his side and the prices English clubs are asking for their players, it's a deal worth doing," said West Brom manager Tony Pulis. The previous transfer record for West Brom was the £10m signing of Brown Ideye last summer. This summer they have signed James McClean, James Chester and Rickie Lambert, plus Arsenal's Serge Gnabry on a season-long loan.

Rondon, aged 25, scored 20 goals in 37 appearances for Zenit last season. "He's got a fantastic goalscoring record in some of the top leagues in Europe and for his country," said Pulis. "He's 25 years of age and still to fulfill his full potential. We hope he hits the ground running of course but understand it might take him time to settle." The player said: "The club showed a lot of interest in me. That's what is important for a player, what you take into account, and there are expectations of me."

West Brom are 1.22 at Bet365 to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table this season.
