Back Cycling: Chris Froome to compete in Vuelta a Espana

Fresh Tour de France winner Chris Froome has decided to take part in the Vuelta a Espana, the third and last Grand Tour of the season. The competition starts later this month. In July Froome became the first British rider to win the Tour de France twice. If he wins the Vuelta he would become only the 10th cyclist in history to win two Grand Tours in one season.

Nairo Quintana of Colombia and Italian Vincenzo Nibali will also take part in what could be one of the most competitive fields at the Vuelta in recent years. Quintana was second in the overall classification at the Tour de France while Nibali was the winner in 2014. Tejay van Garderen will also take part after having pulled out of the Tour de France.

The race will start in Puerto Banus on Saturday 22 August and will end three weeks later in Madrid on 13 September. The last rider to complete a Grand Tour double was Alberto Contador, who won the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta in 2008. Only two riders have managed to win the Tour and the Vuelta in one season: Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault.

Chris Froome is 3.25 at Bet365 to win the Vuelta, Nairo Quintana has the same odds while Alejandro Valverde is 5.00 to win it.
