Back Premier League: Arsene Wenger expects response after opening day defeat

Arsenal will recover from the surprising opening-day Premier League defeat at the hands of West Ham, says manager Arsene Wenger. The Gunners got beaten 2-0 at home on Sunday, even though they had 62% ball possession and 22 shots. However, just six of those 22 shots were on target.

"We will respond to that accident," Wenger said. "The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves. Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to respond. We were not convincing offensively or defensively. I knew it could be a tricky game. If you can't win the game, make sure you don't lose it."

Arsenal finished third in the Premier League last season and managed to win the FA Cup. Wenger has signed just one player this summer, goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea. Media reports claimed the Gunners are chasing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema but Wenger says new players wouldn't have helped get a better result against West Ham. "I would like to think that we are responsible for buying the players, not the media," Wenger said. "When you're a pro footballer, you have to face your responsibilities and not always look at something else. Today we have to look at ourselves and think we were not good enough and not to think that these kinds of things are solutions for us."

Arsenal are 5.50 at Bet365 to win the Premier League this season.
