Back Premier League: Crystal Palace sign Sunderland's Connor Wickham

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of striker Connor Wickham from Sunderland on a five-year contract. The initial fee was 7 million pounds, a million less than what Sunderland paid in 2011 when they bought Wickham from Ipswich on a four-year deal. The fee could rise to 9 million pounds, depending on the player's performances at the new club.

The 22-year-old striker spent four seasons at Sunderland, scoring 15 goals in 91 games. Wickham said after signing for Crystal Palace: "I needed a fresh start. I had four years up north and it's been a bit stop-start." Last season Wickham scored six goals in 40 games, but five of those came in three crucial games in April that allowed Sunderland to avoid relegation.

"Now I've come back home and I can settle down and see my family a bit more and hopefully let my football do the talking," Wickham added. The forward is Palace's fourth signing of the summer, following goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, midfielder Yohan Cabaye and striker Patrick Bamford, on loan for the season from Chelsea.

Crystal Palace are 2.75 at Bet365 to finish inside the upper half of the Premier League table next season.
