English and Welsh councils, led by Newham Council, have been unsuccessful in a bid to convince the British government to lower the maximum betting limit on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals from GBP 100 to a mere GBP 2.
According to a BBC report, the government rejected the application noting that stronger controls have already been put in place and the bookmaking companies are monitoring more closely.
Newham's mayor, Sir Robin Wales, revealed that the councils intend to challenge the government's decision.
"We will challenge this decision, because without a reduction in stakes, FOBTs will continue to blight the nation's high streets," he said.
New regulations were rolled out earlier this year requiring punters that wish to bet GBP 50 or more must talk to staff or set up an account with a bookmaker.

This is really too much of a difference in maximum betting limit, from 100 pounds to only 2, that is just ridiculous and I think the British government is right to refuse that. Maybe in future they could approve some reduction in maximum betting limit at FOBT's but not by this much.
