Australian Football League's Essendon Football Club announced that it will put an end to all commercial partnerships with gambling firms in an effort to focus on existing commercial partnerships outside of the gambling industry.
“This decision wasn't made lightly, particularly with the revenue a wagering partner can deliver,” said Xavier Campbell, chief executive of Essendon.
“We certainly respect the right of betting agencies to advertise in sport, but as an industry we need to proactively monitor the way this message is delivered particularly given many of our fans are children.
“In forming this decision we also took into consideration the feeling of our membership base who have expressed a sense of concern.”
Many are questioning whether or not this move will affect the pokie machines located across club-owned venues, which is unknown at this time.

This is legit decision of this AFL but I don't know how much is clever. In gambling industry we have a lot of money around, and it's weird to leave it. In other hand, maybe there was some influence of betting companies on AFL and they want to get rid of it. Now they need to find new sponsors

I doubt that Essendon football club have so many sponsorship offers and could afford to reject those which comes from the companies linked with the gambling business. In fact I've never heard of this club but still their decision...
