Former Arsenal and Manchester City player Patrick Vieira has made the four-man shortlist of managers that could take over at Newcastle United. Steve McClaren, recently sacked by Derby County, is also on that list. This week the club will kick off the interview process. Patrick Vieira, aged 38, is currently managing Manchester City's Under 21 team but has never managed a Premier League club before.
The midfielder has bags of experience as a player though, he is a World Cup winner with France in 1998 and also won three league titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal. He has also played in the Serie A after moving to Juventus in 2005 and returned to England at Manchester City in 2010. He won the FA Cup with City in 2011 and retired two months after lifting the trophy.
If he gets the job Vieira will be the fourth youngest manager in the Premier League. Newcastle have been without a manager since Alan Pardew moved to Crystal Palace. John Carver, who filled in until the end of the season, should remain at the club as a coach even though he had stated that he would want the manager job on a permanent basis. Newcastle barely escaped relegation, finishing 15th in the Premier League table.
You can bet on who will be the next Newcastle manager at Bet365, here are the odds:
Steve McClaren - 1.72 Patrick Vieira - 2.25 Michael Laudrup - 15.00 Remi Garde - 21.00 Frank de Boer - 26.00

Patrick Vieira was great player and I loved him a lot while he was playing for Arsenal but I am not sure that he can be a good manager. He was tall with long legs and he was great in defense but I am not sure that he can be good manager because he wasn't too smart player, he was hard worker and I respect that but I think...

I am only sure in one thing.Vieira, who is dobtfull manager would be better choice for Necastle than Steve McClaren. He is probably most overrated manager in the world.Only club he bring success to is Twente.I think that with signing him Newcastle would do huge mistake.

I'm not sure about Patrick Vieira as a manager, maybe not yet. He doesn't have any real experiance as a leader of a team. Sure he was top class midfielder, leader on the field, but lookeroom is totally different thing. Props for Newcastle managment if they hire him, but that doesn't change a fact that I hate that club now...

Hope they get relagated next season.

He was one of the best players at his position. Perhaps best of all time. He worked in his career with very good coaches like Capello and Wenger, and he was able to learn a lot. I think that former players should be given a job as soon as they finish career.

Well, every ex footballer sooner or later wants to test his skills on the manager position and after some years of rest Patrick Vieira obviously is determined to break trough in this profession also. Still nothing is sure yet but the owner of Newcastle United likes to risk with new unproven managers and probably he will...

Still nothing is sure yet but the owner of Newcastle United likes to risk with new unproven managers and probably he will give a chance to Viral and if that happens nobody could tell if this will be a successful move or not.

What a great footballer was Patrick Vieira. He played in a lot of clubs and in everyone he was very appreciated by teammates and fans. I agree with you guys that it's risky to give to some "newbie" to lead your team in Premier League, but I can't see why he can't be good manager, he has so much experience in football. And...

It is always risky to give a job to an unexperienced manager, but somethimes it can bring you big benefits.Newcastle made a huge mistake cause they let Alan Pardew to go. If the Saints do not introduce Vieira as a manager, then they should sign a contract with Laudrup. He is very good manager.
