Back Primera Liga: Cordoba vs Atletico Madrid preview

A nearly impossible task awaits bottom side Cordoba as they are looking to end their nine-match losing streak when they face Atletico Madrid on Saturday. The defending champions also need the points quite badly in order to make sure they qualify for next season's Champions League. Atletico won the reverse fixture 4-2, with Antoine Griezmann scoring twice.

Cordoba are seven points adrift at the bottom of the table, so they still have a chance to stay in the top flight if they manage to turn things around sooner rather than later. They haven't earned a point or won a match since January. Their last match was quite dramatic as Cordoba had no less than three men sent off in a 3-1 defeat against Real Sociedad. If they lose again they will equal the league's second-longest losing streak. They have caused trouble for top teams at home though, Real Madrid barely managed to scrape a 2-1 win while Valencia also struggled to beat them.

Atletico are nine points behind league leaders Barcelona, but the title seems lost. Diego Simeone's men must focus on Champions League qualification as they are fighting with third-placed Valencia and also with Sevilla and Villarreal behind them. Atletico haven't won an away match since January and have clinched just six away victories all season. Diego Simeone will have to do without suspended central defender Miranda while young midfielder Saul Niguez has recovered from injury and might be named on the bench.

Probable line-ups:

Cordoba: Carlos - Ferradj, Luso, Bouzon, Crespo - Zuculini, Krhin, Bebe, Borja - Heldon, Andone.

Atletico Madrid: Sotiriou - Juanfran, Godin, Gimenez, Siqueira - Turan, Tiago, Fernandez, Koke, Griezmann - Mandzukic.

My prediction: Atletico Madrid to win 1-0.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Cordoba win - 17/2 Draw - 7/2 Atletico win - 2/5
