Back Cyprus Betting Companies Association Formed to Fight OPAP

Cyprus betting companies are tired of the advantages that Greek-Czech gambling monopoly OPAP has and have come together to form an association to overthrow the monopoly.

Members of the Cyprus Betting Companies Association include Bet on Alfa, Fair Champions Meridien, Cy Betand Megabet Plus, reports the Cyprus Mail.

“We demand an end to the monopoly and preferential treatment OPAP receives from the state. This is now a public company and it's owned by Czechs,” CBCA chairman Akis Avraamides, said

In 2013, OPAP was sold in 2013 to Emma Delta Hellenic Holding Limited. OPAP is the sole operator of lottery games on the island and the association says that since the sale, the Greek state is no longer a shareholder.

“Betting companies invest millions, give large sums back to the state, pay taxes, open up job posts and much more,” said Avraamides who believes that adding competition to the mix would draw in more investors and eventually weed out illegal operators.
