Back UEFA Champions League: Arsene Wenger wants away goals rule changed

After being knocked out from the Champions League by AS Monaco Arsene Wenger says the away goals rule should count after extra time rather than full-time. Arsenal were defeated 3-1 at home in the first leg and won the second leg 2-0 but Monaco qualified on the away goals rule.

"The rule was created in the 1960s and the weight of the away goal is too great today," said Wenger. The rule that the Arsenal boss suggests is already in place in the League Cup semi finals, where away goals count only after extra time. Moreover, the away goals rule does not count at all in the Football League play-offs.

Chelsea were also knocked out of the Champions League on away goals by Paris Saint-Germain. "Two English teams have gone out on away goals and that should be questioned. The rule was created in the 1960s to favour attacking teams but football has changed," Wenger added. The Arsenal boss also said that Monaco did not deserve to qualify.

Arsenal are currently 1/10 at Bet365 to finish inside the Premier League top four this season.
