Corruption and Involvement in Illegal Gambling Ring Among Thai Police Department – Update
Nine additional arrests have taken place in the ongoing Thai police investigation into an illegal football online betting ring. Charges are based on police officers accepting bribes from a reportedly Indian illegal sports betting operator, Abubakar bin Sulaiman. Former Central Investigation Bureau commissioner Lt-General Pongpat Chayaphan is among those currently being held. The arrested recently include one civilian, Police Colonels Watcharaphol Thongluan and Athip Thaennil, Lt-Colonels Phiphat Chawengrajand Watthana Phol-ngarndee, Majors Jakkraphan Leelananthawong and Aphisit Mekprayoon, and Police Captains Nithiphat Kangruambutr and Sakrin Kesornthian. Lt. General Sriwara revealed that 800 bank accounts are being reviewed in search of criminal activity including the purchase of assets with illegally obtained cash. The operation is said to have generated over Baht 3.2 billion; however police suspect involvement with other illegal businesses.
