Back Premier League: Mauricio Pochettino blames players' mentality after Spurs defeat

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says his players don't have the correct "mentality" at the moment. The Spurs succumbed to their third loss at home this season, 2-1 at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday. Things had started well for Tottenham as Emmanuel Adebayor had given them the lead in the 18th minute, but two goals early in the second half gave Newcastle all three points.

"We need to improve a lot to get in top four. It's not tactical or physical it's our mentality," Pochettino said after the match. "It's a big hit for us. We need to be more strong and to have more focus. Today in the second half, straight from the kick-off we conceded a goal. It's crazy."

That goal was scored by half-time substitute Sammy Ameobi, who breezed past Tottenham defender Eric Dier to score just 10 seconds after the restart. Spanish striker Ayoze Perez scored the second goal with a header in the 58th minute. "Seven or six seconds before the first goal, all was happiness and there was good energy in the stadium. Our supporters were happy and believed that we would get a good result," added Pochettino. "But in this moment, I think it was difficult to manage in our head. Our heads had gone and we started to take rash decisions on the pitch. It was difficult because 12 or 14 minutes later, we conceded another goal. At 2-1, it was difficult."

Tottenham have now only won one of their last seven Premier League matches and are currently 11th in the Premier League table with 11 points from nine games. The Spurs are 7/1 at Bet365 to reach their season objective, which is to finish in the top four.
