Back UEFA Champions League: Liverpool vs Real Madrid preview

Two of the most important clubs in Europe will clash on Wednesday at Anfield Road when Liverpool face Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage. The Spanish giants are currently leading Group B with six points out of six while Liverpool are third after losing to Basel last time out. The Reds' last meeting with Real Madrid was a successful one, they won 5-0 on aggregate but that was a long time ago, in 2008/2009.

Liverpool have won just four of their fourteen home matches against Spanish opposition, losing four times. They are on a winning streak in the Premier League though, having recorded two wins on the bounce. Last weekend they had a tough time against Queens Park Rangers but eventually prevailed 3-2. Real Madrid won in a much more convincing fashion last weekend, they thrashed Levante 5-0 to extend their winning streak in all competitions to seven games. So far in the Champions League Real Madrid have beaten Basel 5-1 at home and Ludogorets 2-1 away. They are also unbeaten in their last three away matches with English opponents.

Liverpool will be without Daniel Sturridge due to a thigh injury while Mamadou Sakho is also likely to miss out. Mario Balotelli should feature in attack alongside Raheem Sterling while Joe Allen could make his return in midfield. Real Madrid could be without Gareth Bale due to a hip injury but the Welshman will take a late fitness test.

Probable starting line-ups:

Liverpool: Mignolet - Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Enrique - Allen, Henderson, Gerrard - Sterling, Balotelli, Lallana

Real Madrid: Casillas - Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo - Modric, Kroos, Isco - James, Benzema, Ronaldo

My prediction: Real Madrid to win 2-1.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Liverpool win - 15/4 Draw - 29/10 Real Madrid win - 4/5
