Back Formula 1: Fernando Alonso will leave, says former Ferrari boss

Fernando Alonso will be leaving Ferrari at the end of this season, the company's former president Luca Di Montezemolo has confirmed according to BBC Sport. The Spaniard's departure has been a talking point in Formula 1 for quite some time now, but the driver has never fully confirmed his intention to switch teams. Ferrari might replace him with Sebastian Vettel.

Luca Di Montezemolo told Italian television: "Fernando is leaving for two reasons. One, he wants another environment. Two, because he is an age when he cannot wait to win again." Alonso, now aged 33, asked Di Montezemolo this summer to be released from his contract, apparently after losing faith that the team could set up a winning car in the near future.

The Spaniard has been with Ferrari since 2010, and has finished second in the world championship behind Red Bull's Vettel three times in the last four years. He lost out in the final race in both 2010 and 2012. Di Montezemolo added: "He was disappointed that he has not won over these last years and wanted new stimulus." Alonso will have to decide between joining McLaren right away or taking a year off in order to get a contract with Mercedes in 2016. Di Montezemolo has left his role as president of Ferrari, which he has held since 1991, and has been replaced by Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive officer of parent company Fiat.

Fernando Alonso is 40/1 at Bet365 to win the USA Grand Prix on November 2nd.
