Back Snooker: Ali Carter wins on return from cancer

Ali Carter celebrated his return to competitive snooker with a 4-1 victory against Marco Fu in the General Cup in Hong Kong. The 35-year-old player, formerly number two in the world rankings, has overcome testicular cancer before being diagnosed with lung cancer in May. He hasn't played since that diagnosis.

He was due to play in Sofia last month but pains in his left arm following treatment prevented him from attending the event. The General Cup in Hong Kong is not a ranking tournament, but it will be an important warm-up for Carter if he would feature in next month's UK Championship.

Carter was a runner-up to Ronnie O'Sullivan in the World Championship final both in 2008 and 2012. In the Hong Kong match Carter made three breaks of 55 en route to a comfortable success over home favourite Fu. Carter tweeted after the match: "All things considered, a great start for me beating a top player like Marco. Onwards and upwards."

Ali Carter is 40/1 at Bet365 to win the UK Championship next month, the favourite is Ronnie O'Sullivan at 3/1.
