Back Premier League: Les Ferdinand returns to Queens Park Rangers

Queens Park Rangers have decided to appoint former England striker Les Ferdinand as their new head of football operations. Ferdinand, now aged 47, has played for the club for eight years. He was part of the Tottenham coaching team under Tim Sherwood and he left when the manager was sacked last summer.

Ferdinand will have the task of helping manager Harry Redknapp in his attempt to lift QPR off the bottom of the Premier League table. "Having someone like him involved, someone who understands the history, can only be good," said Redknapp.

A club statement revealed Ferdinand would be "charged with overseeing the structure of the footballing side of the club, focusing on improving the footballing philosophy at all levels". Chairman Tony Fernandes hopes Ferdinand can work closely with Redknapp to avoid relegation after QPR have won only one of their first seven Premier League matches this season. "When the opportunity to return here in this role came up I jumped at the opportunity," said Ferdinand. "There's nothing I want more than for QPR to be successful in the short, medium and long term and I'm excited about the challenge ahead."

QPR are currently 4/6 at Bet365 to get relegated this season, only Burnley have lower odds (4/11).
